Illinois Joins Growing List Of States With Same-Sex Marriage

Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation making Illinois the latest state to approve same-sex marriage.

After months of wrangling among lawmakers and opposition from powerful religious groups, the Illinois Statehouse approved gay marriage on Nov. 5. At the time, Democrat Quinn said he intended to sign it into law.

Moms-To-Be Are Eating Fish, But Choosing Low-Mercury Options

Based on new research, the EPA concludes that women of childbearing age are making more informed choices and opting for low-mercury seafood choices such as shrimp, canned light tuna and salmon.

It's been a conundrum for pregnant women: Forgo fish out of fears of mercury? Or eat it up to get the benefits of all the vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids found in many types of fish and shellfish?

Increasingly, it seems women of childbearing age are opting for a smarter option: They're eating fish, but avoiding the species that are high in mercury.

Our Sense of Place: Toronto series continues with a stripped-down session from Metric. The band was formed in Toronto in 1998 by vocalist-keyboardist Emily Haines and guitarist James Shaw. Drummer Joules Scott-Key and bassist Joshua Winstead round out the rest of the group, though they don't appear on Wednesday's episode.

To find out about terrific local bands for our Sense of Place stop in Toronto, we went straight to one of the city's best-known sources: Frank Yang, founder of the Canadian music and arts blog Chromewaves. Yang has won numerous awards for the site, including Best Music Website in Toronto by NOW Magazine in 2008. Yang has also been a member of the Polaris Music Prize jury since 2006.

Scott Miller and Rayna Gellert appear together on Mountain Stage, recorded live on the campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown. A veteran of Knoxville's lively music scene and a member of alt-country band The V-Roys, Miller was among the first artists signed to Steve Earle's E-Squared label. He then released a series of solo albums, backed by his own band — The Commonwealth — while continuing to play the acoustic shows that first brought him to prominence.
